Maybe you’re not the problem, your environment is
Hi good people!
I hope you’re having a perfect week so far, how’re you doing? Are you achieving what you set out to achieve this week?
Anyhow, last week on a random evening walk with my nephew, he asked me why most designer fashion labels like Luis Vuitton, Dior, Balmain and Givenchy originate from France. I told him that i think it’s because France has created a great environment for fashion entrepreneurs to succeed at the highest level compared to any other country around the World. I believe my reply has some bit of accuracy. In one way or the other, you may have heard about Paris and their fashion labels, runway events like those by Victoria secrets, the Paris fashion week etc. The Paris fashion week actually is by far the biggest fashion event in the world, attended by top celebrities and entrepreneurs from all over the world. If you grew up watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians and followed Kim Kardashian, you remember the incident when Kim was robbed of $10M worth of Jewelry in Paris, right? You’re right, she had gone to attend the Paris fashion week with all that worth of just jewelry. That’s just to show how big of an event it is and how big of fashion France is commanding globally. How did that come by? I still believe it’s because they created an environment that allows fashion entrepreneurs to thrive at the highest level.

Why is that important? I believe as an entrepreneur or creative, there’re environments that nurture your talents and improve them while there’re those that will destroy or dull them. Do you believe that with me? If by any chance you’re a football fan, you may be knowing Jordan Sancho who left Borussia Dortmund at the peak of his career, went to Man Utd and didn’t perform. Then went for a short loan back at his former club and guess what? every media outlet, pundit, blogger believes he’s back to his peak after performing exceptionally well being an integral player to his team’s qualification to the finals of football’s most prestigious competition; Champions league. The reason they say? He’s back in the right environment. So in today’s issue, i want to ask an entrepreneur or creative on this newsletter an uncomfortable question, “for your skillset, what you’re working on and what you want to achieve, do you think you’re in the right environment that helps you to do that? If yes, great. If No, you know what to do. Replicate what Sancho did.

In my country right now, there’s crop farming going on because of the rainy season. People are leaving the cities to go in the countryside to plant their crops. What are they doing? They’re going to an environment where crops can grow well. Crops may not grow well on a 7 storey skyscraper, can they? So if you like to achieve as a commercial farmer, maybe your farm land should be in the countryside where the environment is fit for exactly that.
We can flip it and give an example of Rihanna who left her home country Barbados to the US at the age of 16 to pursue her music career. If she had stayed in Barbados, may be you may not have known her, not used her make up brand for those who do or even got the inspiration that you get from her daily. Or she may not have yet hit billionaire status and made history.
My point is, there is the most right environment for what you’re trying to do. If you do the right thing in a wrong environment, may be you’ll not get the expected results. May be your results will delay.
